Join Jessica as she returns with another amazing mixed media project that you won’t want to miss!  Come and learn a variety of mixed media techniques, as you swim away with three gorgeous sirens.  You’ll be stamping, embossing, crackling, and more, so get ready to roll up your sleeves and get messy!  Each mermaid measures about 8-1/4″ high (top of head/headdress to curve of tail) and will be constructed from heavy cardstock, with jointed arms ready to be posed as you want.  You’ll also want to dress up your mermaids with some of the wonderful charms and embellishments that will be provided, but if you have your own favorites, please bring them with you.  No two finished mermaids will look alike, but everyone will leave with 1 to 3 complete pieces, each one unique and one-of-a-kind.  Make your reservations early because SEATING IS LIMITED to 10 students only, so call now to save your space before it sells out!

Inks Everywhere!

Follow along with us as we explore the "World of Inks" in . . .

     

What Type of Ink Should I Use?

We're often asked what's the difference between the many inks we carry in the store and see on the market . . . dye, solvent-based, permanent, archival, pigment, embossing, and the list goes on and on!  It can be confusing, so we thought we'd try to help a bit with this quick breakdown.

• Dye (water based):  These inks are generally used for stamping on paper, and have a quick drying time.  They come in a variety of sizes, with stamping surfaces made of felt, linen, and sponge.  Most dye inks are manufactured to be acid free, but they do tend to fade with time, especially in sunlight if your stamped surface is not treated with a UV fixative.  They may also run if in contact with water or other liquids, as well as if they're used in combination with other water based mediums such as markers to fill in detail areas.  Water based dye inks can be easily cleaned from your stamps with water, while some stampers like to use damp paper towels or baby wipes to remove the ink.  Examples include Tim Holtz Distress Inks, Stampin' Up! Class Ink Pads (except black), and Marvy Matchables.

• Pigment:  These inks are suitable for a variety of stamping situations.  Pigment ink is thicker than a water based or dye ink, and is best used from a spongy pad.  Where a dye ink is designed to soak in and stain the fibers of your paper, a pigment ink will not, and dries on top of the surface.  While you can stamp with pigment ink on coated or glossy papers, it will take a little longer to dry than other inks, but the color will also remain on the surface, appearing more vibrant.  Some stampers prefer to use a heat gun to thoroughly dry pigment ink to avoid smearing, but a pigment ink, however, does not dry and can smear when touched or rubbed.  A plus side of this, though, is that you can apply special powders such as embossing powders to the ink, which, when heat activated, will provide an adhesive to the ink.  Examples include Adirondack Inks by Ranger, Stampin' Up!'s Craft Inks, ColorBox, Brilliance, Inkcredible, Encore, and VersaMark.

• Archival or Permanent:  These inks are also dye based, but unlike the water based variety, will not run with water or other liquids once dry.  They are usually manufactured acid free, and are a preferred choice among scrapbookers and stampers alike.  Since these inks do not run or smear once they're dry, they can be very helpful when wanting to add details with water based markers or watercolors.  Some things to remember when using these types of inks, some stampers have reported that the ink may turn to an off color when in contact with certain glossy papers or cold laminate adhesive.  Also, on some coated or glossy papers, these inks don't seem to dry completely, even if a heat gun has been used, and will smudge either when touched or when the ink comes in contact with moisture, such as water based markers.  When using these inks, you may want to experiment with different types of papers and surfaces before creating items in quantity.  Because these inks are waterproof, it may be more difficult to clean them from your stamps.  A solvent based cleaner may be necessary, but be careful what types of stamps you apply these cleaners on.  Solvent cleaners may melt, or make gummy, some clear stamps, so be sure to test your stamp before using.  On a final note, while these inks are considered waterproof, they aren't classified as permanent and aren't suitable for some applications such as stamping on fabrics or shrink plastic.  Examples include Ranger's Archival Inks, Stampin' Up!'s Black, and Memories by Hampton Art.

• Solvent Based:  These inks are considered permanent once dry, don't require heat setting, and are suited for use on wood, walls, plastic, glass, metal, and paper.  These inks may have an odor when opened and should be used in a well ventilated area.  They will definitely stain your stamps and can be hard to clean off even with a solvent cleaner.  One technique that may be most easily accomplished with a permanent or solvent based ink is stamping on shrink plastic.  Examples include StazOn, Zim Ink, Decorit, 123 Ink, and Fiesta.

Speciality Inks:

• Embossing:  These pads are made like the pigment pads, but come in clear or tinted (either faint blush or very pale blue) "inks".  They are obviously not used for their own color, but rather provide the wet base necessary for a medium such as embossing powder to adhere to a surface.  The tinted pads can be more helpful than the clear pad, allowing you to see where your image has been stamped. 

• Fabric:  These are of a pigment ink consistency that may be used for the same things pigment or embossing inks are used for, but they have an added bonus.  When heated, these inks become permanent.  This is especially useful for fabric and wood stamping.  A special feature you can take advantage of when fabric stamping with these inks is that if you make a mistake, you can launder your items if it hasn't been heat set to remove the ink.

Even though this barely hits the tip of the ink iceberg, we hope it helps clears up just a little bit of the mystery and confusion surrounding inks and their many uses. Now . . . let's go stamping!

You've Got Mail!

It seems nowadays that everyone gets busy and things get put off.  Important things.  That's exactly what happened with our sharing of the results of our monthly "ATC Workshop & Swap Challenges".  So, without any further ado, it's once again time for the results of our "Challenge" from February.

As you know, any member of the group can "Challenge" the others with creating something special and unique.  There're no "rules" except that anyone that participates creates one Challenge Item for "Show & Tell" using everyday mixed media materials . . . embellishments, paints, papers, stencils . . . whatever strikes their fancy! Without any themes or other guidelines, the ultimate goal is to showcase each artist's personality through the type(s) of embellishments, decorations, or techniques used.  The Challenge given in February was to create "Mail Art Postcards" to share at the next month's Workshop.  The only restriction placed on each artist was that each finished piece could be no larger than 4" x 6", or postcard size.  The results are long overdue in coming, so let's get goin' . . . 

Charlotte Fern created a bright and colorful postcard that anyone would truly enjoy receiving in their mailbox.  Using one of her favorite stamps, she's colored the background with chalks and inks over stencils, blending the colors together.  She then used blended chalks to color to the clothes and hair of her stamp, and viola . . . a gorgeous piece of art that you could easily mail to a friend or display on a shelf at home.

Charmaine Conway once again couldn't stop with just one.  For her first card, Charmaine fell in love with Tim Holtz' project in a recent issue of  a Stampington & Company stamping magazine and had to try to recreate it.  Using embossed metal tape on die cuts, alcohol and distress inks for "age" , and embellishments from Tim's idea-ology line, she's ended up with her version of the original, which looks pretty close to Tim's.  For her second postcard, Charmaine created one with a true travel spirit with a "pocket" perfect for holding all those tickets and ephemera you're sure to gather on your round-the-world trip.  With additional embellishments from Tim's idea-ology line, papers and ephemera from 7 Gypsies, her finished result was ready for mailing.

  

Deborah Schinzel also had fun with the Challenge and created two postcards.  For her first, she created a whimsical and musical feel using stamps and coloring with Copic markers as accents.  As a final touch, she added a strip of washi tape "stamps".  For her second postcard, she created a small-sized collage from a favorite family photo of two generations of family members with two "sets" of sisters.   The background was created with the blending of opposite ink and paint colors.  To compliment the photo, she's added a favorite sentiment stamp on a coordinated printed paper and embellished with smaller stamps (butterflies and "May Require Extra Postage").

Jeanette Lee was another artist thinking travel as she created her postcard.  Finding an image of a bridge on the internet, she printed it on photo paper to give the look of a true vintage postcard.  Once her image had dried, she added embellishments with stamps using an archival ink so there'd be no smudging.  She added color to the edges with a gold Sharpie pen, before using her "fancy edge" cutting scissors.  Add an "air-mail" flag and "stamp", and her postcard was ready for the mail.

Even before she began,  Nicole Durst had the idea of using a favorite image of a small girl in mind.  She prepared her background with coordinating inks and paper with a vintage feel, tearing the edges for a distressed and aged look and feeling.  After applying the image of the girl, she added highlights with black marker around the edges to make her stand out from the background.  With embellishments of torn words from music, this simple, yet poigant, postcard carries a strong message . . . "I've heard the pray'rs . . . but this one made me cry".

Terri Durst's postcard revolves around all things "girly".  After creating a background on watercolor paper colored with inks, she began with a favorite Julie Nunning stamp from Prima that she stamped onto a piece of cardstock and cut out, removing the skirt.  To create a new and exciting skirt, she twisted strands of crepe paper and "draped" them in a flowing pattern, much like fabric.  She restamped her stamp onto a patterned paper for Julie's top and headband, then fussy cut and applied each over the original image.  Raiding the recycle bin in her office, she discovered stamps and address labels that suited her card perfectly.  Adding additional embellishments of stamps, snippets of papers, and bling, she's created the perfect postcard for any girl, no matter what age.

Lylia Hagerty created her two postcards based on vintage cards and images for Valentine's Day.  With cherubs and roses floating atop layers of colored tissue papers, her first postcard leaves no doubt that it's intended for that special Valentine.  In traditional shades of red, pink, and white, Lylia has added embellishments of glass hearts and sparkle for finishing touches.  Keeping in tune with the same Valentine color pallette, she's created her second postcard with coordinating papers, paints, and embellishments to spell out "Love".  Complete with vintage postage and cancellation stamps on the back of each (not shown), each postcard is a true work of vintage-inspired art.

"Parisian Journey Beeswax Journey"

Jack & Cat Curio return to CraftFusion with one of everyone's favorite Workshops, "Parisian Journey Beeswax Collage".  Join them on Wednesday, February 6th from 10:30am to 2:30pm as you learn this creative method for making rich fantastic art pieces using beeswax and various pieces of ephermera.  You'll be introduced to the basics of beeswax for mixed media and collage as you create your own beautiful 10x10 collaged beeswax panel that will be perfect for any home decor.  Other topics introduced will include the fusing of layers, embedding objects, molding and stamping into beeswax . . . just to name a few!
