Cost:  $40.00 (includes lunch)

Join Jessica as you continue your journey through the amazing “World of Altering!”  In her newest Workshop, you’ll learn how to alter a toy gum ball machine with paints to create a metal/metallic look.  Once your gum ball machine has been altered, you’ll decorate it using Graphic 45’s new paper collection, “Voyage Beneath the Sea”, to create a unique Steampunk fish bowl when finished.  Each person will leave the Workshop with a unique finished project that would make the perfect home decor piece or gift.  Everything you’ll need to decorate your altered gum ball machine will be available in the Workshop, as well as many more items to choose from, but if you have any special embellishments you’d like to add, please feel free to bring them with you.  Come and learn how to turn everyday items that may not be used anymore into a new altered project!  Make your reservations early because SEATING IS LIMITED TO 8 students only, and this Workshop is sure to sell out quick!

Supplies to Bring:  Basic Craft Kit (BCK), including craft sheet or mat; scissors; hot glue gun; and Glossy Accents.  Optional Supplies:  Perfect Pearls Powders; and any special trinkets or embellishments you may want to add .  All other supplies and materials will be provided.

Show & Tell . . .

If you're a frequent visitor of CraftFusion, you know we always love to hear about the different types of projects our guests are creating and are always encouraging them to bring in and show off their creations.  Once again, we've been lucky enough that another one of our favorite visitors (actually, you're all our favorites!) took us at our word and did just that.

Kathleen Lee absolutely loves to create albums, whether for family members, friends, and occasionally even for herself.  In the past, she's come in to visit, surprising us with some of her amazing creations.  When she brought in her most recent, though, she definitely "blew our socks off" and we couldn't wait to take photos to share with everyone!  The photos hardly do this gorgeous album justice, but see if you don't agree.

After a month or so of planning, she began by using one of her favorite paper collections, "Olde Curiosity Shoppe" from Graphic 45.  When completed, her finished album holds more than 100 photos with areas for journaling and all types of memory keeping.  With a dual binding system reinforced with duct tape, the album has twelve pages fashioned in a "gatefold" style, with six pages on each side.  Overflowing with pockets, tags, flips & flaps, and so much more . . . did we mention repurposed toilet paper rolls? . . . the end result is outstanding.  Embellished throughout with antique buttons, feathers, charms, ribbons of all sizes, computer generated images . . . as well as over a cup and a half of gears! . . . Katheen's finished album is nothing short of a true work of art.  Of course, we couldn't capture all the wonderfulness of this album, but here's a sampling . . .

Album Designed & Constructed by Kathleen Lee

Kathleen created this beautiful album as a Christmas gift for a good friend, but wanted to show it off before it was passed on to it's new forever home.  What a lucky friend and amazing gift!

There you have it . . . more beautiful work from another one of our mega talented artists!  We invite everyone to leave a comment below to let us know what they think of Kathleen's beautiful album.  And if you'd like to have us showcase and share one of your projects, please bring it in to show off.  We always love seeing and hearing about everything you create!  Who knows? You just may be our next "Show & Tell" Super Star!

Thank you for sharing, Kathleen!

And the Results Are In . . .

It's once again time for the results of our "Challenge" from our monthly "ATC Workshop & Swap" group.  If you follow our blog, you know we're frequently given "Challenges" by any member of the group.  There're no "rules" other than anyone that participates is asked to create one Challenge Item for "Show & Tell" using everyday mixed media materials . . . embellishments, paints, papers, stencils . . . whatever strikes their fancy! Without any themes or other guidelines, the only goal is to show each artist's personality through the type(s) of embellishments, decorations, or techniques used.  The Challenge given in November was to create "Fascinators" in whatever design we wanted to share at the January Workshop.  The results have been long in coming, so without any further ado . . .

"A fascinator is a headpiece, a style of millinery. The word originally referred to a fine, lacy head covering akin to a shawl and made from wool or lace, but mostly feathers. In the modern usage, it refers to a woman's alternative to hat for formal attire; it is usually a large hair decoration on a band or clip with elaborate trimmings and decoration like a formal hat and it can incorporate a base to make it a miniature hat designed to be worn on the front, side, or back of the head." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fascinator)

Charlotte Fern created her fascinator from scratch using papers, ribbons, and images based on her favorite movie, "Alice in Wonderland" with Johnny Depp.  Don't you think she's captured his likeness exactly with the style of her little hat?

Charmaine Conway couldn't stop with just one.  Known for her "steampunk" style, Charmaine surpised everyone with her first fascinator using a formed felt hat with feathers, blooms, ribbons, trims, and touch of bling, without a gear or spot of grunge in sight.  But for her second hat, she stayed true to her steampunk style using gears, trims, feathers, ribbons, and even a touch of touch of bling.

Deborah Schinzel surprised everyone with her super dressy fascinator using an ordinary headband  and sparkly, out-of-this-world looking embellishment from a present she'd received as a gift.  Just goes to show what a little ingenuity can do!

After watching a YouTube video demonstrating the how-to's of creating blooms from burlapJeanette Lee decided to try the technique for herself in her light & airy fascinator.  Designed to be worn as either a headpiece or pin on a springy blouse, she's created the true multi-purpose art piece.

It seems Nicole Durst was another artist who couldn't stop with just one!  With a dressy version created from a pattern piece she designed herself, it's the perfect accompaniment for any outfit.  With her second design, Nicole stepped "outside the box" a bit, using a small wire birdcage that she placed over her formed felt hat which she crackled painted to resemble  tree bark, then added flowers, moss, and even a bird nest & eggs as embellishments.

Terri Durst raided her stash of  goodies & embellishments and went wild in creating her fun and colorful fascinators.   Using a formed felt hat for her first design, she embellished it with ribbons, feathers, blooms, and of course, a touch of bling.  Using a pattern piece she created herself as the base for her second creation, she added embellishments that would compliment any fall ensemble.

If you'd like to see more photos or details of any of these fantastic creations, drop us an e-mail.  You'll be absolutely amazed at the creative nature of all of these wonderful artists!

Join us in congratulating and thanking all of these great artists for a job well done!  We'd love to hear what you think, so please leave us a comment . . . or two! . . . and share your thoughts.  And if you'd like to take part in our monthly "ATC Workshop & Swap" or Challenges, join us the second Thursday evening of each month from 6:00pm-8:00pm and you too can begin to think big in a small way!  There's no membership required and it's FREE!  Hope to see you there!

Watch for our next Challenge Results ~ Altered Postcards ~ coming soon!

Show & Tell . . .

If you're a frequent visitor of CraftFusion, you know we always encourage our guests to bring in and show off their creations.  Once again, we've been lucky enough that one of our favorite visitors took us up on our word and did just that.

Some of you may be familiar with Jessica Tucker as "the gal at the register" this past summer.  Now that it's fall and Jessica has returned to school, it doesn't seem to have hampered her creative mojo at all.  In fact, if you stop in for a visit, you'll see many of Jessica's projects displayed throughout the store because she's one of our talented Design Team members.  But last week, Jessica stopped in for a visit to show off her newest creation, and she definitely blew us out of the water.  So much so, we couldn't wait to take photos to share with everyone. See if you don't agree.

"Spooks and Spells" ~ Jessica Tucker
Copyright 2013

Beginning with a "found treasure" from the Goodwill, Jessica transformed an old faux wood printer tray into a true work of art.  After having fallen in love with Graphic 45's "Steampunk Spells" paper collection, she wanted to capture the feeling of a vintage druggist and his wares, steampunk style.  To compliment the steampunk theme, she also incorporated Graphic 45's "Olde Curiosity Shoppe" and "Steampunk Deputant" paper collections, as her background, but then mixed in other found objects which she used in ways never intended.  How about the "frame" for Mr. Seymour Bones?  This was formerly a finger pull for a closet door! And the "fence" that those flying pigs are jumping through? Punchinella, with an application of rusting solution!  Even her spiders dangling webs were formed from old bed springs!*

And there you have it . . . Jessica's "Spooks and Spells" tray.  Jessica created this fantastic work of art to display over her fireplace for Halloween, but maybe with a little arm twisting we can convince her to "loan" it to us after the holiday to hang on our wall.  Be sure to leave a comment below to let us know what you think of Jessica's project!

Thank you for sharing, Jessica!

If you'd like to have us share one of your projects, please bring it in to show off. We love seeing and hearing about everything you create!

*Many of the found objects used in Jessica's project can be found on our Vintage Tables right inside the front door of the store!  Come & see what we have . . . you'll definitely look at things differently!
