Farewell to Keiko

A few days ago, I shared the news of our beloved Keiko's battle with Valley Fever.  As of yesterday, Keiko had developed more symptoms of the advanced stages of the disease.  After several conversations by telephone, the doctor asked that we bring him back to his office first thing this morning for a more thorough examination.

Unfortunately, the exam did not reveal good news.  Keiko had one kidney that had failed completely, and his second kidney was expected to follow suit within just a few days.  We were faced with an extremely hard decision . . . continue to fight the Valley Fever with drugs and medications in the hopes of curing it while Keiko continued to suffer, or allow him to go to a more peaceful place where puppies are not sick or hurting.  With a broken heart, I choose to make the drive home alone.

I would like to express our family's gratitude and thanks to everyone for their warm thoughts and kind words of encouragement over the past few weeks. Without them, a difficult time would have been even more difficult.
